BC Liberals holding Extraordinary Convention this weekend

This Saturday, February 12, 2011, the BC Liberal Party will be holding an Extraordinary Convention at Canada Place in Vancouver.

This is a one issue convention to determine whether each member of the BC Liberal Party will have a vote to elect their next leader – or if voting will be weighted with each constituency association having an equal number of points (100) no matter how many members.

As noted on their party website this change will include:
·         The Leadership Vote is a direct vote of all members of the Party who have a right to vote on the Leadership Vote weighted equally for each electoral district in British Columbia and counted in accordance with this Section 67.
·         Each member of the Party who has a right to vote on the Leadership Vote may vote by a preferential ballot on which the voter indicates their preference for leadership contestants. A ballot is not spoiled because the voter has not indicated a preference for all leadership contestants.
·         for each electoral district, the first preference votes recorded in favour of leadership contestants on the ballots cast by the members of the Party who ordinarily reside in that electoral district are counted and then the 100 points allocated to the electoral district are allocated to each leadership contestant on the basis of the ratio the number of the first preference votes received by that leadership contestant bears to the total number of votes counted for such electoral district

Just in case you are wondering, the BC Conservative leadership vote, to be held on May 28th, will be a mail-in or on-site vote … and in the true spirit of democracy each member of the party will have an equal say in who the leader will be (1 member = 1 vote).
