The ineptitude of this government hurts people -- real people!

Moderate scoliosis curve -- read on and
you'll understand why this photo is here.
Earlier today I posted the following on Facebook

GEORGE ABBOTT SAYS:
We are truly disappointed by the union’s decision to hold a three-day strike beginning next week. A strike of this nature will significantly disrupt student learning and creates tremendous concern for parents and families."

ME ... as you may have noticed George, I am a little more than just disappointed in both the BCTF and the government -- you're both acting like spoiled brats!

Given that you do seem to understand there will indeed be a significant disruption to learning, may I suggest that members of the legislative assembly get their collective butts into the legislature over the weekend, and pass Bill 22!

It didn’t take long for a response to be posted by my MLA, Kevin Krueger who said:

I am presently in the Legislature, working away. There are times to do night sittings and weekends; we do not think this is one of them. We're looking for lasting, long-term solutions, and an outcome respectful of all. Did you watch the debate yesterday? Obviously not - there was nobody there "acting like spoiled brats," as you put it. If you want to be a serious candidate, do some serious thinking and research, and refrain from childish admonitions about people's "collective butts," as above. Good grief.

That required a response … and included something I have been sitting on for a few days now because I was extremely angry.  What I have been sitting on and not made mention of prior to today, is exactly why I am not only tired with the petty politics we have been seeing by the NDP and the Liberals, and with government waste ... I am actually very ANGRY!

That is why I responded to my MLA with the following:

Kevin, I was not, and would not, question the amount of time that MLA's put in, on behalf of constituents. On whether members should be in the legislature this weekend, debating and passing Bill 22, I hope we can respectfully disagree

As to watching the debate in the Legislature Kevin Krueger ... thankfully I did not have to watch or listen to the usual petty politics and antics that take place. Instead, we've been in Vancouver, for the past few days, at Children’s Hospital for Pre-op on twice delayed surgery on an 11 year old girl who has scoliosis.

This spine is of a person
with a 62 degree curve
Her upper spine has a 104 degree turn from center -- and the lower portion has a 94 degree turn -- in the OPPOSITE direction. Think about the pain she has gone through, with a steadily increasing degree of misplacement in her spine. And now because surgery could not be done any sooner, they will only be able to get her back to where it was when the problem was first diagnosed.

I'd encourage YOU to do some serious thinking -- and research -- on what is needed for example at Children’s Hospital to help provide the services children in our province deserve to have. Do that BEFORE you decide to add another 9 BILLION DOLLARS to the debt (2011 / 12 to gov't estimated $66.4 BILLION for 2014 / 15).

How many specialists and surgeons could we hire for the $7.5 million dollars A DAY we'll be paying JUST to service that ballooning debt? ... how many classroom teaching assistants could we have in our public schools ... how many caregiver’s could we make available to our seniors ... what kind of resources would we be able to put into the judicial system ....

Tell me Kevin ... do you have answers to that?

YES … I am angry … I should be!

Many, BUT NOT ALL, MLA’s are indeed acting like ‘spoiled brats’ … however they do need to get off their ‘collective butts’ and get to work for the well-being of all citizens in our province.

We deserve NOTHING LESS, because the ineptitude of this government hurts people -- real people!

I'm sorry to read about what your daughter is going through and wish you well.
Alan, at this stage I wonder if there is any way back to reason without eliminating the current model. We now have a massive union body, largely unaccountable to its members and pushing agendas dreamt up by the most radical in that group.
On the other side we have a group of professional, high-paid negotiators also unaccountable to the people who pay the bills. And the only way to express disapproval is a ballot every 4 years with a wealth of other issues obfuscating more issues.
If we consider the root of education and its mandate to develop thinking skills and provide learning for the young, the current system bears little resemblance to that lofty origin.
I personally endorse a voucher system for each child, to be spent where the parent chooses as the only way out of the mess we're in. Thoughts?

I have looked into the voucher system in the past, when I was part of the Reform BC movement.

It has many pro's to it -- however there would be difficulties for people especially in rural areas where this would be hard to implement.

We need to have a real hard look at our education system. I think a start would be putting together a groups of people from all walks of life and political persuasions ... along with teachers and education professions ... and others who were charged with looking at what bis working, and what is not, would be a good start.

My belief is that they should have every opportunity to look at all options, which would includes other education models being used in North America, and around thew world
