No wonder people say that politics in British Columbia is crazy!

Before I begin today's Conservative Thoughts blog post, I should reiterate that while I am a member and director of the BC Conservative Party, this blog is not officially or un-officially sanctioned by the BC Conservative Party.  Now ... on with today's post.

If you're confused by politics in BC, you're not alone
The NDP hold no differentiation between the Provincial and Federal wings of their party.  In fact they clearly state they are, "... proud to be associated with the democratic socialist parties of the world"

From the Preamble of the NDP Party constitution you can read for yourself the following:

The New Democratic Party believes that social, economic and political progress in Canada can only be assured by the application of democratic socialist principles to government and the administration of public affairs ...

... the New Democratic Party is proud to be associated with the democratic socialist parties of the world and to share in the struggle for peace, international co-operation and the abolition of poverty.

ARTICLE III — Affiliated Membership and Donors
3.01.1 Affiliated organizations shall be those BC organizations affiliated to the NDP of Canada.

And exactly what countries define themselves to have a socialist government?  Well those would include China, Cuba, Vietnam, Laos, North Korea, Venezuela, and Syria.

I also sadly noted the following from the Conservative Party of Canada Constitution:

15. PROVINCIAL PARTIES
15.1 The Party shall not establish provincial political parties. The Party shall promote and maintain relationships with existing provincial conservative parties.

It seems to me that with the exception of a number of true small 'c' conservatives, it seems that Section 15.1 of the Conservative Party Constitution is ignored; at least here in British Columbia.

Now ... here is something else which is also a well known fact:
At the time of the BC Liberal leadership campaign, to replace Gordon Campbell, Christy Clark was a member of the Federal Liberal Party.  It also well know that in her youth she was also a member of the Young Liberals of Canada.

Here is what political commentator Bill Tieleman had to say back in March of 2011:

Well that didn't take long!  Premier-Designate Christy Clark has begun the process of Federal Liberalizing her new government at all levels.

Notwithstanding the use of arch-Conservative Gwyn Morgan on her Transition Team to premier for at least optics, Clark is already stacking the deck with federal Liberal operatives.

Her campaign featured a host of Paul Martin-ite and Stephane Dion-ite operatives, including  FD Element's Don Millar, federal Liberal Party spokesman Brad Zubyk, an ex-Harcourt NDP government aide, and of course Campaign Manager and now Chief of Staff Mike McDonald, who backed ex-NDP Ontario Premier Bob Rae in the 2006 federal Liberal leadership race.

And of course hidden in the backroom was her brother Bruce Clark - a longtime federal Liberal bagman and LPC BC executive member best known for the December 2003 police search of his home to find confidential BC government documents on BC Rail given to him by convicted fraudsters David Basi and Bob Virk.  That would be the BC Legislature Raid case of course.

But now the more serious work begins - transforming government into a more palatable federal Liberal look - call it LP-osuction - removing the undesirable BC Liberal & federal Conservative love handles and replacing them with more attractive Grits.

So it seems what we have in BC, are New Democrats, who support both federal and provincial wings of the Party.

As Peter Pan said, “All of this has happened before, and it will all happen again.”

An opinion piece ran in the Tuesday November 20th edition of 24hrs Vancouver entitled, "Liberals could win next provincial election"

It read in part:
... Premier Christy Clark gave what was, by all accounts, a rousing speech .. a clarion call to arms leading up to the election next spring. Indeed, there wasn’t a defeatist tone in the speech or mood in the house...

Soon to be BC Liberal candidate John Martin sharing his
thoughts of Premier Christy Clark on CKNW (03 / 28 / 12)
"Not even the most devoted Liberal supporter could
argue with a straight face that this government has
earned a fourth mandate. Theirs is a legacy of deceit,
incompetence, and financial mismanagement."

... recent polling has the governing Liberals deader than the proverbial doornail that would seem to be more than a little strange. But the premier is nothing if not a fighter ... it seems likely at this point that Adrian Dix and the New Democratic Party will form the next government, it is by no means a fait accompli.

... BC  politics has been about big government and unions versus free enterprise ... when the NDP got into power in 1973 and 1991, it was because the free enterprise party was in tatters. I’m not sure that can be said now — especially with an energized and feisty premier.

... if Clark can frame this election in the traditional left-right terms of free enterprise versus big government and big labour, plus play down the battered Liberal brand, she might just have a chance.

Seriously.

My response?  Well I certainly had one, and so I wrote:
Sorry but you are writing off the BC Conservative Party wayyyyyy to soon -- and yes I am a member of the party.

I think you, and many others, are going to be surprised at who ends up going to the legislature in Victoria next May. Seriously!

That led to Collin Rogers taking a moment to suggest:

And we’re off …

Christine Clarke, BC Conservative
candidate for Port Moody - Coquitlam
Since late yesterday, one media outlet after the other has been running stories that British Columbians in the riding's of Port Moody – Coquitlam … and Chilliwack Hope … will be going to the polls soon.  The date of the vote, according to the media, will be April 19th.

Here’s one of the latest stories, this one from the Vancouver Sun this morning; “Christy Clark to call B.C. by-elections today”:
Premier Christy Clark will today call by-elections in B.C.'s two vacant riding's, meaning voters there will be going to the polls on April 19.

The by-elections will take place in Port Moody-Coquitlam and Chilliwack-Hope, which were made vacant after resignations by Liberal MLA's Iain Black and Barry Penner.

The call will spark a showdown between Liberal candidate Dennis Marsden, New Democratic Party candidate Joe Trasolini and B.C. Conservative Christine Clarke in Port Moody-Coquitlam

In Chilliwack-Hope, Liberal Laurie Throness will face off against NDP candidate Gwen O'Mahony and John Martin of the Conservatives.

Clark had until April 7 to legally call the by-election in Port Moody-Coquitlam, and until July 30 to make the call in Chilliwack-Hope.
Voters in these two riding's have been waiting for Christy Clark to call these by-elections, but understandably, with things not looking good for her government, she has long delayed.

Protecting the environment, and sustainability, is more than simply siding with foreign funded so-called environmental protection groups

The Vancouver Sun had a story on the weekend’s anniversary celebrations for the NDP … and the plan’s Adrian Dix has to win the next election.   That aside, one of the things that stood out for me was the following comment he made:

The differences on key issues of sustainability between ourselves and the [B.C.] Liberal Party and the [B.C.] Conservative Party have never been greater and the public perception that we’re different has never been less,” he told the convention.

“We have to change that by campaigning around issues of the environment and putting them in the context of jobs.”

the South Thompson River

Well there is more – MUCH MORE in fact -- to protecting the environment and to sustainability.  And what it does not mean is mean simply siding with foreign funded so-called environmental protection groups … funded by the likes of the Getty’s and Rockefellers.

And as far as BC Conservative Party policy on the environment AND jobs; it just happens to actually be, in all probability, the most balanced of all parties in the province.

I’m a BC Conservative ... I believe in the protection of the environment that I live in … and why wouldn’t I??

I want it for selfish reasons of my own!  Those being my own enjoyment … that of my children … and my grand-children as well!

This Week in BC Politics

It's the end of the week, and what a week it was!  Monday was awesome with Harper’s Conservative finally achieving majority government … and of course BC had its own share of political stories.  Some of these you may have missed … and some perhaps not.  So without further adieu, here is the week that just was in BC politics.

Tax will give only a modest boost to the economy while creating less than a quarter of the jobs predicted, government-appointed panel says ...

If the response to this Saturday's fundraising dinner is any indication, the BC Conservative Party has a bright future in the area, says Randy White. The former Reform Party MP is helping to organize the …

Still however I suspect a few folks may wish to catch up on a few of the stories this week in BC politics ... and maybe check out a flashback or two as well. If you are one, the read on ...

15 years ago (April 17-23 /96) B.C. politicians resist Liberal HST push

Times Colonist April 22, 2011 ... These are glorious days for British Columbian's who enjoy politics. I'm not one of them, but I admit to being just a little excited to see some life coming back to the BC political scene...

This week in BC Politics

It’s the end of the week and time to take a look back at a few of the political stories that made the news this past week.  Sunday evening we’ll also find out who will be leading the provincial NDP into the next general election, which some people are now speculating may be held this Fall.

So who will lead the NDP?  My guess is that it will be Mike Farnworth, although not because he is the most traditional of all the candidates.  Farnworth will be elected by members of the NDP because he is the most middle of the road candidate, and the one most likely to lead the party closer to Liberal policies.

That being the case, again I ask the question – why do we need to have an NDP party when they could merge with the BC Liberals to become Liberal Democrats?

Anyway … enough of that … as mentioned, here are a few of the stories that made the news this week … along with a quick flashback to the past.
