Whichever side if the gender field you are, male or female, how would you feel knowing there was a good chance you had your job or position because of your gender, physical attributes, race or colour?
Inside each of us, I believe, is an innate desire to know we are in our position in the workplace or in organizations because of our capabilities. That can be born out through history when people and races have rebelled to be accepted and valued for who they are. Whenever that is denied to a people they rise up against that injustice – whether they are being denied because they are a minority – or a majority.
That is why this week I find it sad and unfortunate that the next leader of the NDP will never know whether they have been chosen in large part due to gender or because they are indeed the best person for the job.
Here’s the way it works; the rules of the NDP Party states that both men and women must be represented in the jobs of party leader, treasurer, and leader. Currently the party leader is male ... as is the treasurer. That means for the next leader of the party to be say NDP finance critic Bruce Ralston, the party president or treasurer is going to have to resign, according to gender rules in the NDP constitution.
There are two things then I find sad and unfortunate about the leadership race for the NDP. On their own website (http://www.bcndp.ca/) they say:
I am pretty sure that most Canadians had hoped that the era of political correctness and gender equality was at an end, but the provincial NDP seem to be more interested in simply presenting the appearance of equality. So, will the next leader of the NDP be chosen because they are the best candidate? We'll never know because their constitution itself is undemocratic.
That’s just my opinion – what do you think?

· The leader of the BC NDP is elected through a one-member, one-vote election by the members of the BC NDP ...YES but the choice of leader will be gender based which is contrary to the belief of gender and racial equality
· The NDP is a place where people come together to work for a better future -- one where social and economic justice are the guiding principles ... should social justice not begin at home? In other words there is NO social justice if the leader of the NDP is to be chosen due to gender.
