After starting with several jokes, Lieutenant Governor Steven Point administered the oath of office to the provinces 35th premier. Now British Columbians are asking the fate of several major issues of concerns, and how they will be dealt with by Premier Christy Clark, and her new cabinet.
Who the new cabinet members are is all over the news, and so I will not spend much time mentioning them, with the exception of two.
The cost of government has been soaring. In light of NO new budget coming down anytime soon, I’d like to know what the new Finance Minister Kevin Falcon will do about the provincial debt which is expected to hit $60 billion within two years. That is something which is not a joking matter.
We also need to call on the new Attorney General Barry Penner for an impartial and independent inquiry into the Basi / Virk situation. After all, former Liberal Leadership candidate Mike de Jong, who was Attorney General at the time, indicated that paying the defense fees (for the Basi / Virk lawyers) contravened normal government policy.
Many residents that live outside of the provinces larger communities, where public transportation is readily available, should be asking about the next increase to the Carbon Tax. Of course no one would believe there is anything the province can do about political upheavals a world away, which has been causing fuel prices to steadily increase. The carbon tax does however play directly into fuel costs, and for starters she should be calling a stop to that.
Other than Christy Clark, there has been no major change to the key caucus members that stood shoulder to shoulder with Gordon Campbell through one failure and humiliation after the other over the past two years. Given that, how will she deal with what has been a serious lack of accountability to voters in BC.
That is one thing I will really be looking closely at over the next months ahead.
