Have you every noticed that those posted signs, that say you must be polite or you will not get service, or / and security will be called, are ONLY in government offices in BC (or government funded offices)??
You would never see a sign like this at a building supply store ... department store ... restaurant ... car dealer etc. These kinds of signs only appear at places like offices for government services, and say hospital. ONLY at places you would be because there is something you really need.
So why are those signs there??
Many of us feel that for whatever reason government workers are not providing us with the service we feel we should be receiving --- or in many cases the service we receive is poor, or delivered with an attitude that says tough luck and too bad.
In the general public, those kinds of employees would often be canned and told to go packing. In the public sector however, that is generally not the case. That's because in the case of medical care workers say, there are not enough trained men and women to replace those with a bad attitude.
Many of them may however have a bad attitude because they feel they have to work to many shifts --- or perhaps they end up working overtime they don't want -- because they feel there's too few that can be called on to work the shifts. I think perhaps others may feel that so many co-workers have been let go they are being called on to do far more than they can handle.
I'm not saying I agree with these reasons, only that those MAY be some of the reasons why this problem exists.
Regardless seeing those signs in the workplace – places where are tax dollars are paying for the facilities, and the wages and salaries of the workers, is an insult to those of us who require the service ... and are paying the bills through our taxes.
Management ... and unions ... need to find a better way of dealing with workplace problems, rather than holding the rest of us ransom for whatever small amount of service we may actually get, need or deserve.
We go to private businesses because we may wish to have an item – or need an item – but if the service we get is crappy we can go elsewhere. Medical clinics – hospitals – government service centres on the other hand?? We we generally only have one of these in a community, and we're not generally there on a whim.
Government workers in BC, just like any one else, need to be treated with respect – but so do we the taxpayer. So ... can we please find a better way to deal with problems rather than threatening taxpayers with even less service?
