Yesterday (June 8th) blogger and political commentator Alex Tsakumis wrote a piece entitled ‘EXCLUSIVE’ BREAKING NEWS: BC Conservative Leader Set to Resign Immediately! 

It was typical of his style of writing in that it took the scorched earth approach in lambasting people / individuals.  This time, it was John Cummins once again in his sites.

I was notified off his piece by an acquaintance, and after viewing what he had written, and some of the comments from his readers, I decided that perhaps I would, after all, post a comment.

I knew in advance it would cause Alex to begin frothing at the mouth, and it indeed did not take long.

If you go to the actual blog piece you will notice many of my responses were not allowed to see the light of day by him.  Despite the fact that they were posted long before some of the others, they still remain, Your comment is awaiting moderation

The following have NOT been edited or changed in any way by me. I ask you, does any level headed political commentator write and say the things he does?

I am sad and disappointed — but not surprised — to see you write what many have come to expect from you, Alex .  

After skewering John Cummins, with your usual negative ground scorching rhetoric, you then went on to say, ” I wish John Cummins and his family well. He’s served the public as best he could and for that he is to be commended and afforded the honour and respect that goes with it.” 

All I can say to you sir is … what a pompous and arrogant ass! 

I remain as always –a PROUD BC Conservative! 

Over to you now Alex; go ahead and lambast me with more poison. It’s what everyone expects off you

Well … you were totally and completely not up to your usual efforts Alex. Well gosh durn gee whiz (is this the talk you expect from what you proclaim to be Neanderthal conservatives? You are a pitiful creature sir, and anything but the adoring admiration of you band of your blind adherents will do.

You can think anything you wish of John Cummins — and our members — myself included. BUT to them follow-up with a meaningless asinine congratulatory close is complete and utter arrogance.

Your self-stroking checklist of so called faults has NOTHING to do with what you wrote in your so-called Exclusive Breaking News story — nor does it have anything to do with my comments.

It is little more than part of your on-going campaign of caustic comments, with no real understanding of our goals — which have nothing to do with our so-called social / religious miss-deeds — and DOES have everything to do with a straight forward message of fiscal conservatisms, job creation, provided needed services, and strengthening health and education.

Carry on oh great one — and a sure your adorning fans will cheer you on as you continue your campaign of hate speech

Oh Alan, for those of us watching you on social media this comment will come back to bite you LOL…

God squad Conservatives are the reason we have Christy, and Alan was a big part of that with his friends… I saved the screenshots..

As for what people expect from Alex, we expect him to hold zealots like you to account, exactly what he is doing.

Who are you to come here and condescend to Alex, and by extension, us his readers. It seems your party needs YOUR attention redeeming itself, especially after screwing us over, by dividing votes with your WEAK leader.. pay attention to your own weaknesses as God would tell you.

Alan those of us that pay attention are laughing right now because your *cough* loyalty has been pretty thin on social media.. hypocrisy knows no boundaries as you’ve so clearly demonstrated here today…

After reading something you said and did a few weeks ago I’ve been waiting for this moment…

It’s pretty clear you and the Conservatives fear Alex Tsakumis and his ability to get the brown envelopes….

Alan to be very clear it was partly because of you and the folks you communicate with on social media that prevented me from voting “Free enterprise.”

I hate being told by holier than tho types that their own s**t doesn’t stink.. .. rolling my eyes at the hypocrisy …

Ah …a loyal defender of the hate drivel that Alex writes –it took longer than I thought t would

Call me whatever you like — makes no never minds to me; however I will not tolerate patent lies and miss-representations

I for one will NOT be stuck in the rut of self-serving righteous adherents to anything.

I have deliberately cast a wide net for people with many thoughts and ideas that do not necessarily agree with mine. It challenges me and others to look closely at my beliefs, and to make changes when and where it is needed.

Exploring new and different ideas has always been key to growing and learning — something I’m pretty sure most would agree with

The Liberal Party have everything to fear by our growth (much as Social Credit did when the Liberal Party came back from the wilderness)

Today I am going to share with you, part of a letter, which was received by one of our Kamloops Constituency Association board members.  I think in reading it, you will find it echoes the response of some people you yourself may have spoken, or been in touch with: 

I am very conservative fiscally and probably small ‘c’ conservative socially, a strong believer in free enterprise but with a social conscience.

I was initially intrigued by the BC conservative movement, I was interested in its direction.  Had some high hopes that it could find a place in BC politics.

I must say I am presently disillusioned by many of the actions ... 

Sound familiar --- are you becoming disillusioned your self when you hear those words, or others similar.  

Well "Buck Up, because here is a response that MUST be delivered to those who believe in what we are trying to do, but are been swayed by outside influences.  And ... every word of what follows IS true!

Dear John Doe ...

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond, and let me say right off the bat that I appreciate your candor in the remarks you made.  If  I were to say, I was not discouraged, by the events that took place this past Summer, I would not be speaking the truth. 

That said, I attended the party AGM held in Langley, and what I saw and felt, was the heart and soul of the membership striving and working towards achieving approval of new policy that would be part of our platform next May.

I also saw our rank and file members listening intently to the words of those who were seeking the lead the party on the Executive and Board of Directors.  Given the overwhelming mandate those elected received, it is obvious that we have majority support for our party leader John Cummins.

Let me also say that he, like anyone one else, has his flaws, however our party is NOT the John Cummins Party.  It is the BC Conservative Party, and we the members (the grassroots) are the people that drive it ... unlike the Adrian Dix led NDP ... and Christy Clark led BC Liberals.

We have lost some of our members through-out the internal problems we had -- those however were NOT the people that stood behind the majority of our membership who are firmly behind a bottom up approach, rather than one led from the top down. 

Those individuals, who are now gone, were more concerned with having their own way, in creating their own little empires, rather than supporting the aspirations of our members. 

We have come out the other side --- we are stronger for the trials we went through -- and our members KNOW the party does, and will, stand behind the will and direction of its members.

BC based businesses pay the Carbon Tax, but their
competitors from outside of the province do not

As BC businesses question the BC Government's decision to move forward with the corporate tax increase; many British Columbians, including business owners, are asking if this government truly represents free-enterprise, and the workers it employs?

It doesn’t, and for good reason.  If you ask people in the Kamloops area, to define this government's claim to representing so-called 'free enterprise', you’ll be met with varying responses. Whether business owners, or their employees trying to raise a family and keep a roof over their head, neither can see how this BC Liberal Government has helped them keep a few more dollars in their pockets.

BC businesses have faced not only the increase in corporate tax rates, but also user fees which penalize their business growth.

Don’t take my word for it … here’s the thoughts and opinions of business leaders in British Columbia:

BC food producers have said the carbon tax hurts their bottom line.

The Business Council of BC has described the carbon tax as unfair because BC based businesses pay the tax, but their competitors from outside of the province do not.

Shachi Kurl, director of provincial affairs for BC and Yukon for the Canadian Federation of Independent Business said … “The costs of doing business are starting to become unsustainable.”  Kurl added that rising hydro and other utility costs, as well as the carbon tax, are other increases businesses have faced in recent years.  “All of this is coming out of the same till.”

Cariboo Cattlemen’s Association says the carbon tax continues to put ranchers at a competitive disadvantage ... “we’re paying the tax and there’s no investment coming back... into the sector to reduce our carbon footprint ... either exempt us from the tax or get a program in place to provide some benefits back to us.”

And from the Fraser Institute comes the following:

Competitive personal income tax rates enable the province to better retain and attract high-skilled professionals as well as promote entrepreneurship and innovation in BC

And … middle-class British Columbians not only face continuing increases to the rates and fees they pay to government (such as increased medical payments and insurance rates), they also pay higher rates for food, and other necessities, due to the carbon tax.

Is this what a Family First, or Free Enterprise agenda, looks like?

With this I now ask, “How strong are your convictions?”

Yesterday I received an email from Peter Brown; he is the Chair of the Fraser Institute, and works with CanAccord Financial.  In his email he spoke of the ‘lost years’ under the NDP, the fiscal mess they left, that people were leaving the province, and the need for one ‘big-tent’ option to prevent this happening again.

There was no request to keep this matter private, and I was not the only one to receive his email.  The following are exchanges we had on this matter, and which on reflection tell me that the BC Conservative Party must continue to build a solid foundation on which we can fight, and win the next election

Voters are NOT interested in a so-called big tent free-enterprise coalition -- they are interested in honest, open and accountable government.  These things are no longer part of how the BC Liberals operate -- and why more and more people are joining and working to build the BC Conservative Party.

IF you are interested in fiscal responsibility ... honesty ... respect for voters ... and accountability, then the party you should be supporting will be the BC Conservatives.

The Liberals have gone from one crisis after the other --- one disaster after the other --- one blunder after the other.  That is not a party that I (and it appears 75% of the population) will support.

If you wish to ensure the BC NDP do not gain office, then I would encourage you to become a member of the BC Conservatives and to support us in any way you are able ... including encouraging your friends to do so as well.

You misunderstand a nonpartisan appeal. Without some ability for all on the center right to find some mutually acceptable compromises we will undoubtedly elect the most doctrinaire socialist government in our history at a time of an alarming global geo political and economic background.

If they make it they are likely to get 2 terms which will give our Province and our youth another disastrous lost decade at the worst time. It is worth remembering that Chretien won three elections as a result of a split right of center vote. It has been said that we get the government we deserve and I believe we will look back with regret if we can't find some solution to the current differences on the center right

The risk of vote-splitting comes not from BC Conservative voters

Former BC Liberal supporter Rick Peterson, and now BC Conservative nominee candidate for Vancouver-Quilchena, wrote a great piece which ran in the Vancouver Sun yesterday.

The following are some of the comments I received in an email from him this morning, along with a link to the story.  If you haven’t had the chance to read it yet, it’s well worth the time.

The obvious momentum and strong support that the BC Conservatives are enjoying under the leadership of John Cummins is provoking dire warnings of “vote-splitting” from some quarters. The argument is that our BC Conservative strength will cause a split in the “free-enterprise” vote that will allow the NDP to come to power next May.

The vote-splitting argument has some merit. But as you’ll see in this op-ed piece, the risk of vote-splitting comes not from BC Conservative voters. The threat instead comes from voters continuing to support the BC Liberals at a time when it’s clear that the free enterprise coalition is forming under new leadership – and that is the leadership of the BC Conservatives.

Recent election history in this province provides clear and compelling evidence of this, as you’ll see in this link to the op-ed piece.

No one else can ever make your choices for you. Your choices are yours alone

Last night I received an email from a resident of Kamloops.  This person is NOT a member of the BC Conservative Party … at least not yet.  Here is what they had to say:

The BC Conservative Party offers a valuable 3rd choice to the voters of BC.  I am amazed how dysfunctional a 2-party system plays out in real life. 

History has shown a minority government actually achieves the wishes of the people.  After all, isn't that what democracy is supposed to work?

Why is it that the people of BC can understand the need to have a choice, or an option, that fits best with their needs, but not the BC Liberals?

On June 26^th, following a talk John Cummins gave to business leaders in Vancouver, Christy Clark again reiterated her insistence that the only choice the people of BC should have is her Liberal Party.  She said, and I quote:

We need one party, to lead the coalition, against the NDP.  We don’t need two.  And the coalition against the NDP is this party that I lead, the BC Liberals.

What Christy Clark continues to miss, and not understand, is that British Columbians are not listening that message any more.

She has failed to understand, or ignores the fact, that she and her party MUST EARN the vote of British Columbians.  The BC Liberals litany of gaffes, issues, and problems continues to grow day by day; which is why we are seeing people across the province abandoning the party in droves.

Interesting isn’t, how the human mind thinks? Or … venom and hate the order of the day.

This is me, the big scarey BC Conservative. Hmmm ... maybe Petrosa
and Pierre are right; women, children, and those in need beware.

Those who get the Kamloops Daily News will have seen a Letter to the Editor that I submitted, and which ran in Saturday’s paper.  It was actually an edited version of a blog post I did.  The letter went as follows:

After winning the leadership of the B.C. Liberal Party Christy Clark stated: "I want you to be my partners in change in Victoria. I want you to be my partners in bringing open government. You can count on me to listen, you can count on me to engage, and you can count on me to make sure government really does include you. I have specific ideas on how to do these things but I also need to hear from you," she said.

"My top priority will be to put families first. In British Columbia we are blessed with families of all shapes and sizes, families as diverse as our great province. This is the foundation of our communities. This is the building block of our future."

What a difference a little over a year makes.

Since then her government has gone from one crisis to another … she has watched as people who last election voted Liberal, have moved to both the B.C. Conservative Party, and the NDP … saw a former Liberal cabinet Minister (John van Dongen) switch to the Conservatives… and she’s seen one story after the other saying the Liberals may actually come third in the upcoming byelections.

She has also watched as both her approval rating and the fortunes of the B.C. Liberals have fallen in poll after poll.

Now, from all sides of the political spectrum, people are beginning to question if she can even survive as leader of the party before the next general election to be held in May 2013.

When Clark announced she planned to seek the leadership of the B.C. Liberal Party, these are the opening and closing words which she spoke: “I am running for leader of the B.C. Liberals – and to lead us to an election victory over the NDP – to bring new leadership to our province. That means more than simply a new premier, it means a new way of doing business for our government.”

 “… with me you can count on a leader who is direct, responsive, and committed to bringing positive, prosperous change to B.C.”

Again, what a difference a little over a year can make; which is why people are asking, “How long can Christy Clark last?”

It didn’t take long for the responses to roll in one of which stated:

This is a free enterprise government?

So the BC Liberals claim to be the "free enterprise party / government"?

Wildlife viewing is one of the top tourism sectors in the province.   

I’ve had it passed on to me that in Bella Coola, BC Parks decided to build a "free" bear watching stand.  The problem is, there are already several licensed, and tax paying, commercial operators who were providing bear watching tours, to people visiting the Bella Coola Valley.

Now isn’t that a nice use of their tax dollars --- as the government goes into competition with them --- providing free bear watching.

This doesn’t sound like the ideas of a free enterprise party to me.
