Wouldn't you agree? Is this a legitimate expectation we should have?

Once upon a time a popular opposition firebrand named Christy Clark, stood up in the BC Legislature, to rip the NDP government for spending tax dollars on shameless, self-promoting advertising. 

“People don't want the government to spend 700 grand of their money so they can find out how to access services; people want this government to spend their money so that those services are there for them to access. That's what British Columbians want,” Clark railed. “How many firefighters, how many police officers will not be on the street because [the Finance Minister] is spending… on her advertising campaign?” 

The above is from an opinion / editorial piece by BC Taxpayers Federation Director Jordan Bateman (November 2012) entitled, "Government Ads Use and Abuse Taxpayers’ Money".  

For month prior to the May 14th provincial election campaign, the BC Liberals took hits from all quarters, on this clearly wasteful and partisan adverting campaign.  

Sadly, during the four week election campaign, it was all but forgotten ... even by former radio co-worker Bill Good who on November 16th, over the airwaves of CKNW had stated:  "Those are very partisan ads. They should be bought and paid for by the Liberal Party of BC." 

The election is of course ended a week ago, but perhaps the major political commentators such as Keith Baldrey, Vaughn Palmer,  Bill Tieleman, Michael Smyth, etc, will now ask this question which I now pose: 

"Will the Premier comment to ending this kind of self-promotion and stick to truly informative ads providing BC residents with 'needed' information?"  

I believe if she does this, it really will help to put her on a more solid footing with a large number of British Columbians who still sit in two distinct camps; those who didn't vote for her ( over 55%) ... and those who again for a number of reasons(including a belief it doesn't make any difference) didn't cast a vote at all (approximately 48%).  

By the way, this is equally a fair question to ask of Adrian Dix and the NDP, as he himself had also pushed for a ban on partisan information being presented in government advertising being paid for by taxpayers, and had indicated that if elected he would put forward legislation to stop this from happening again.

So I put the question forward to both leaders then; are you against partisan political advertising which is paid for by taxpayers, and will you put forward legislation / support legislation, that would see this in place and enforced?

It's fair question to ask this, and the taxpayers of BC should have every right to know the answer ... wouldn't you agree?

Tell the BC Liberal's, and the New Democrats, enough is enough!

Today we have a guest commentary from BC Conservative Party member, and Kamloops South nominee candidate, Peter Sharp:

One of the stories in today's edition of the Kamloops Daily News had the following headline; "MLA expense reports lack detail, taxpayers’ federation says -- 'It’s a virtually worthless document'

Expense reports showing how much B.C.’s provincial politicians spend on travel are worthless, a director of the Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation says.

“It’s flawed in many ways,” Jordan Bateman said Friday.

The reports don’t include a breakdown of ministers’ expenses, doesn’t give context on the number of trips they actually took or where they went, nor does it include who travels with them, although MLAs are allowed to take someone on 12 trips a year.

“It’s a virtually worthless document,” he said.



While the BC Liberal government crows about what a wonderful job they are doing with our economy -- the BC Taxpayers says BC Liberals and NDP MLA's are being completely unaccountable with our tax dollars. 

This is just ONE of the reasons why I have chosen to seek the nomination to run as the BC Conservative candidate in Kamloops South Thompson. Here are the FIRST two things the party I support believes in:

The BC Conservative Party is founded on and will be guided in its policy formation by the following principles:

1) A belief in clearly defined public policies and programs that are affordable and effective and for which delivery is accountable to all the people of British Columbia.

2) A belief in managing the government to the highest standards of integrity and transparency and British Columbians are entitled to full knowledge of services rendered and their costs.


We have endured two decades of NDP and BC Liberal governments. 

This government has found new, and improved ways, to take more from us

Quote from Christy Clark (main page of the BC Liberal party website):

"Since I became your Premier on March 14, 2011, I have been focused on one thing: making life better for B.C. families."

ALSO ... from the BC Liberal Party website comes this statement under the things they believe:

"Government must put families first in all decision-making. This means: making life a little more affordable for everyday families ..."

Hmmmm ... I really have to question that Christy because ...

• The cost of premiums we pay for the Medical Services Plan ... UP
• Hydro rates ... UP
• ICBC rates ... UP
• BC Ferry rates ... UP and service is DOWN
• The Carbon Tax, which is applied to the cost of all fuel so heating, groceries, clothing, transportation costs are all ... UP
• Government budget deficits ... UP
• The Debt (to be paid by our children and grandchildren) -- UP and now approaching $66 BILLION

Is this Christy Clark, overwhelmed at the growing debt?

It unconscionable that this government has to pay borrowers roughly $7 million every day ... just for interest payments on that debt!

And here is something which was just pointed out on Tuesday (Jan 22 / 13) by the BC Taxpayers Federation; "The Property Transfer Tax, along with all of these other taxes, charges and fees that government has added to the cost of a home in British Columbia, is choking the average family."

Here is what Jordon Bateman, BC Taxpayers Federation Director said of the property Transfer Tax, "It’s shortsighted and ultimately damages the long term strength of the B.C. economy."

Over the past few days I have been asking where and what the BC Liberal Plan is --- and there it's been all along -- gouge every last nickel we can from the people of BC.

Don't leave it with us where we can decide where, and how, to spend the earnings from our labors; perhaps on a night out with our spouse, a new pair of skates for one of our children, a few fixer upper renovations to our home, or a simple drive in the country.

No ... instead this government has found new and improved ways to take more from us.

Again ... as BC Conservative Party leader John Cummins has said, "Government needs to spend smarter -- NOT more!"

This BC Liberal government of Christy Clark can crow all they like (in taxpayer funded partisan ads) that they have spending under control, and that they will have a balanced budget this Spring.

I ask ... HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?

Their record over the past several years shows otherwise -- they couldn't even get this years budget deficit right, having to revise and increase the total deficit 3 times!

If people are indeed looking for government accountability -- and a government committed to connecting with the people of BC through common sense policies -- the choice is clear.  On Tuesday May 14th, 2013, British Columbians need to elect, and send to the legislature in Victoria, BC Conservative Party MLA's.

ACCOUNTABLE? … OPEN? … HONEST? … FAIR?

Last year we heard horror stories of individuals and families, who desperately needed services from Community Living BC, that were being turned away. 

There was however money for executive to get BIG bonuses.

NOW, in a story yesterday in the Victoria Times Colonist we hear that Christy Clark’s BC Liberals have decided that:

 ... Senior executives at Community Living B.C. are getting pay raises to make up for a government decision last year to eliminate their performance bonuses, the Times Colonist has learned. Social Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux confirmed Monday that the money senior managers previously earned as bonuses is simply being rolled into their base pay...

In another story in the Vancouver Sun, they went further to say that:
The three vice-presidents who previously earned up to 10 per cent of their base salary in bonuses will get a permanent 9.66 per cent increase in salary once pension contributions are included. The actual increase in base pay is 8.6 per cent or $11,871.

Directors and managers, who previously earned bonuses of up to five per cent of base pay, will get hikes of 4.96 per cent and 4.93 per cent including pension contributions. The increase in base pay for managers is 4.4 per cent or $3,659, while directors will get an extra 4.43 per cent or $4,736.

"I think it's a poke in the eye for taxpayers," said Jordan Bateman of the Canadian Taxpayers' Federation.

Last Fall, the BC Community Living Action Group (BCLAG) was telling us that:

• The BC government was wasting $1,000 / day as Community Living BC (CLBC) refused to approve group home placements
• That the wait list figures being presented by CLBC were totally unreliable and that an external review of CLBC’s mandate and operations was needed
• That the one-time $6 million in new funding was inadequate to stem BC’s community living crisis, and that what was really needed and required, to stem the community living crisis was $70 million

Faith Bodnar, the Executive Director of the BC Community Living Action Group stated that …  … the situation is as desperate as anything she has ever seen. Disabled individuals are being re-evaluated and stripped of services, at the same time as others are moved out of their group homes.

When compared with the rest of the country, this province's development pales

… politically embarrassing … the lack-lustre performance can't be excused by noting that Campbell had nasty little (or maybe not so little) recessions at the beginning and the end of his term, because so did all the other provinces that B.C. is being compared to … further such embarrassment is a key factor in why Clark decided not long after she took over from Campbell to pull the plug on the board … it's not just one province's performance that is being measured - it's all the others' as well …

Taxpayers still on the hook months after deputy fired

Jordan Bateman, B.C. director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, said du Toit's severance deal defies common sense. "This is another ridiculous payout from government to senior staff.  We've seen these over and over again this year."  … living allowance always troubled the federation.  "I mean, it's not like she was a pauper in the first place.  She was pulling down significant amounts of money in salary." …

BC Conservative Party leader John Cummins believes many Liberals are feeling alienated by party shift

"We're not in this to come second," Cummins said. "We are in this to win. I think this is a small 'c' conservative neck of the woods, and I think that given that we really are the only small 'c' conservative party in British Columbia, our platform will certainly resonate with the folks here."
