There’s a great editorial in today Times Colonist entitled “MLAs need bigger role”. The following are just a few excerpts from it.
It's unfair to say that MLAs have spent the past eight months on holidays, even though the legislature hasn't met since June 3, 2010. But it's fair - and important - to ask why they accept such a diminished role….
… And even if the government has no legislation to bring forward, MLAs could play a more useful role. Legislative committees, for example, are established to look at issues, consult experts and the public and report on ways of improving life for British Columbian's. But they only meet when given a mandate, and the Cam pbell government has chosen to sideline them.
…. The education committee has not met since 2006. The health committee hasn't held a meeting since Jan. 11, 2007. And the aboriginal affairs committee hasn't done any work since 2001.
MLAs could and should have a much bigger role to play, inside the legislature and in shaping policy through committee work.
There are some great points made in the editorial, which I encourage you to read, so click HERE
